The uses and applications of Zinc Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Zinc Oxide are white pigment (ASTM D79-86); USP grade; and rubber grade.

About Zinc Oxide. Zinc Oxide is a white odorless solid insoluble in water and alcohol and soluble in acid and caustic solutions (amphoteric behavior). Due to its nontoxic aspect and color stability, it promptly replaced white lead as the main white pigment after the development of the French Industrial Process, later being replaced by Titanium Dioxide. In the second half of the 19th century, white zinc started to be used to reduce the time of the rubber vulcanization process, expanding its use and turning it into its primary usage, also increasing the durability and thermal conductivity of the rubber.

Zinc Oxide should be stored in tightly closed containers in a dry and well-ventilated place at ambient temperature (15 °C to 25 °C). It should also be stored away from strong acids and strong alkalis. No special precautions are needed if the material is used correctly.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Zinc Oxide are listed below.

  • Zinc (French air oxidation process),
  • Zinc oxide concentrates/zinc scrap + coal (American direct process),
  • Zinc sulfate (calcination)

The uses and applications of Zinc Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Zinc Oxide are white pigment (ASTM D79-86); USP grade; and rubber grade.

Zinc oxide is currently used as one of the most important activators in the rubber vulcanization process, capable of reducing the time for the production of tires and other products. Its stability also guarantees its use as an anticorrosion white pigment. Other minor applications are as a carboxylic lattice crosslinking agent, as a fertilizer additive, as a fire-retardant for wood and paper, as compounds of some ceramic products, and as a pig feed additive.
