About LLDPE. LLDPE (a.k.a. Linear Low Density Polyethylene), one of the prominent polyethylene types, forms a copolymer through the combination of ethylene and alpha-olefins. Among the commercially employed comonomers, notable examples of short-chain branches include 1-butene, 1-hexene, and 1-octene. The physical and mechanical characteristics of LLDPE are influenced by various factors, including density, type, and quantity of the comonomer, as well as molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD). Compared to Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), conventional LLDPE distinguishes itself by exhibiting a narrower molecular weight distribution and the absence of long-chain branching. These distinctions play a significant role in defining the unique properties of LLDPE.

The physical and mechanical attributes of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) are intricately influenced by multiple factors, encompassing density, type, and quantity of comonomer, also known as short-chain branches, as well as molecular weight (MW) and molecular weight distribution (MWD). The short chains associated with the comonomer impart interruptions in the polymer chain, hindering the formation of crystalline structures and impeding the attainment of high densities. There are the main types of LLDPE, according to the comonomer used: LLDPE butene, LLDPE hexene and LLDPE octene.

LLDPE Handling. After the pelletization process, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) is transported in substantial volumes via rail using hopper cars. Conversely, for smaller quantities, LLDPE is packaged and shipped in corrugated cardboard boxes, facilitating convenient handling and transportation. To ensure its optimal condition and preservation of its properties, LLDPE should be stored in a cool environment that allows for proper ventilation.

LLDPE Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of LLDPE are listed below.

  • Ethylene (slurry polymerization),
  • Ethylene (solution polymerization),
  • Ethylene (gas-phase fluidized-bed polymerization)

LLDPE Uses. Film grade represents the largest application for LLDPE resins, comprising over 80% of overall consumption and nearly 90% for metallocene-derived LLDPE resins. LLDPE films exhibit high tensile strength, puncture resistance, toughness, and superior low-temperature properties compared to conventional LDPE films. In stretch film applications, where low modulus, high strength, elongation, and puncture resistance are critical, both blown and die-cast LLDPE/VLDPE films are employed. Ethylene/1-butene copolymers are the cheapest but have lower film strength compared with ethylene/1-hexene and ethylene/1-octene copolymers. LLDPE resins find significant use in injection-molded products, constituting 7% of their consumption. Compared to high-pressure LDPE, ethylene/1-butene LLDPE demonstrates superior mechanical properties, offering better impact strength and stress-cracking resistance.

The cost-effectiveness and excellent end-use properties position LLDPE resins as the preferred material for various plastic film applications globally, including garment bags, laundry bags, dry-cleaning bags, and ice bags. Housewares make up over half of LLDPE utilization in injection molding, benefiting from LLDPE's enhanced stiffness, impact resistance, and distortion resistance at high temperatures compared to LDPE. Lids for glass and HDPE jars exhibit excellent gloss and dimensional stability when made from LLDPE. Industrial containers and garbage cans manufactured with LLDPE resins showcase exceptional toughness and resilience to rough handling, thanks to the low brittleness point of LLDPE.

LLDPE Price Outlook. The price of LLDPE (Injection, United States) increased during February 2020 to 1,050 USD per metric ton, which represents a rise of 5% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, the prices of LLDPE (Injection, United States) decreased modestly by 4%. Meanwhile, the average price of LLDPE (China) amounted to 1,000 USD per metric ton, from 1,310 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the price of LLDPE (China) is 4% lower than the price one month before.

The price of LLDPE (Southeast Asia) declined slightly throughout February 2020, reaching 971 USD per metric ton.  The price is 4% lower than the average price in the previous month and 24% lower than the average price one year before. In contrast, the prices of LLDPE (Middle East) decreased modestly during February 2020, reaching 938 USD per metric ton, which means a decline of 3% from the previous month’s price and a decline of 24% from the previous year’s price. 

The prices of LLDPE (C6 film, Europe) experienced a modest decline of 40 USD per metric ton from the prior month's price, to 1,080 USD per metric ton. Such price movement meant a decrease of 4% on a monthly basis and a decrease of 4% on a yearly basis. On the other hand, in February 2020, the price of LLDPE (C4 film, South America) witnessed a rise of 38 USD per metric ton when compared against the previous month's price, to 830 USD per metric ton. The February 2020 price is 4% lower than the price one year before.
