About Epoxy Resins. Epoxy Resins consist of polymeric materials presenting more than one three-membered ring known as the epoxide group. Most of the industrially important epoxy resins are bi- or multifunctional epoxides. There is a great variety of types of epoxy resins, which can be cured or uncured with varying properties. Liquid Epoxy Resins (LER), Solid Epoxy Resins (SER) and Bisphenol F are major examples of uncured Epoxy Resins; while Phenol Novolac Epoxy Resins (EPN) and Cresol Novolac Epoxy Resins (ECN) are examples of cured resins.
LER consist of crude DGEBA (diglycidyl ether bisphenol A) and are the most important intermediates in epoxy resin technology. SER based on DGEBA are derived of LER via two processes: taffy process and fusion process. Their main characteristics are: degree of polymerization, epoxide equivalent weight (EEW), molecular weight (MW), and viscosity. EPN are made by epoxidation of the phenol-formaldehyde condensates (novolacs). They range from a high viscosity liquid to a solid. Their performance and end use is highly dependent on the cure process and cure agent used. ECN are analogous to EPN. They present better formulated stability and lower moisture absorption, but at higher costs.
The transportation and storage of Epoxy Resins vary according to the Resin composition and formula. Most of them derive from DGEBA (liquid epoxy resin), which may crystalize at room temperature, although the change in quality observed is little to none. To avoid crystallization, the resin can be stored in moderately elevated temperature according to its grade (a typical range is from 50 to 55 °C). Epoxy Resins should be stored in cool, dry places, in tightly closed containers, to prevent the loss of volatiles and moisture absorption.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Epoxy Resins are listed below.
- Bisphenol A + epichlorohydrin (dehydrochlorination)
The uses and applications of Epoxy Resins may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Epoxy Resins are industrial grade; and medical grade.
