About Phthalic Anhydride. Phthalic Anhydride (a.k.a. PHTAN) is the anhydride of phthalic acid. It appears as a colorless or white solid in the form of needles and it has a characteristic odor, being toxic if inhaled. When mixed with water, if forms a corrosive solution.
Chemical Formula. C6H4(CO)2O
Commercial Grades. Technical grade (5-8% moisture); pure (min 99.8% purity)
Uses. Phthalic anhydride is mainly used as epoxy resin curing agent and vulcanization retarder.
