About Carbon Disulfide. Carbon Disulfide (a.k.a. CS2, Methanedithione) is a volatile, colorless liquid with an unpleasant ether-like odor. It is highly flammable and toxic and is released by volcanic eruptions. It is an important solvent for rubbers, fats, resins, asphalt, phosphorous, sulfur, selenium, bromine, and iodine.

Carbon disulfide is transported in drums, tank trucks, special portable drums tanks, rail tank cars, barges, and ships. Air transportation is strictly prohibited. Carbon Disulfide should be stored in steel containers. Chromium stainless steels, glass, and ceramics may be recommended at elevated temperatures. Copper and its alloys should be avoided. Carbon Disulfide is highly volatile, has a wide flammability range, and low ignition temperature, leading to a readily combustible mixture with air. For this reason, containers must be filled with an inert gas blanket. In summer it must be kept in shade and sprayed with water to prevent pressure from rising.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Carbon Disulfide are listed below.

  • Natural gas + sulfur (Folkin process; coproduced with hydrogen sulfide),
  • Metallurgical coke + sulfur (coproduced with hydrogen sulfide)

The uses and applications of Carbon Disulfide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Carbon Disulfide are technical and reagent grades (99.0 to 99.9% purity).
