Phenol
Phenol is transported at high temperatures as a bulk liquid in ships, roads, or rail tank cars. Storage tanks should be of stainless steel and equipped with heating coils throughout the entire tank. Smaller quantities of Phenol are conveyed in steel drums, or if the product contains water, drums of galvanized sheet metal.

Phenol (a.k.a. Carbolic Acid, Benzenol) is an organic compound found as a white, crystalline solid with a characteristic odor and burning taste. It is very soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, and chloroform. The solubility in water is limited below 65 °C and above this temperature, phenol and water are miscible. An interesting characteristic is that it gradually turns pink when exposed to light or heat.

Smaller quantities of Phenol are conveyed in steel drums, or if the product contains water, drums of galvanized sheet metal.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Phenol are listed below.

 • Cumene (liquid-phase oxidation/acid-catalysed hydrolysis, coproduced with acetone)
 • Benzoic acid (oxydecarboxylation)
 • Cresylic acid (fractionation, coproduced with cresol/xylenol)
 • Chlorobenzene (hydration)

The uses and applications of Phenol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Phenol are molten liquid and aqueous solution.

Phenol is mainly used as a disinfectant; isocyanate blocking agent; selective solvent; laboratory reagent; slimicide; and biocide. It is also used in pharmaceuticals; dyes; indicators; and germicidal paints. This commodity can be used in the manufacture of derivatives, such as: adipic acid; aniline; anisole; BPA (bisphenol A); cyclohexanol; cyclohexanone; diphenolic acid; diphenylamine; diphenyl carbonate; diphenyl ether; fluorobenzene; hydroquinone; phenol-formaldehyde resins; phenyl acetate; o-cresol; p-nitrophenol; resorcinol-formaldehyde resins; salicylic acid; 2,6-xylenol
