Price Dynamics. The Propionic Acid price in United States increased during September 2018 to 1,090 USD per metric ton, which represents a rise of 6% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Propionic Acid prices in United States increased significantly by 8%. Meanwhile, in China, the average price of Propionic Acid amounted to 1,470 USD per metric ton, from 966 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the Propionic Acid price in China is 20% higher than the price one month before.
The price of Propionic Acid in Brazil declined throughout September 2018, reaching 1,280 USD per metric ton. The price in Brazil is 4% lower than the average price in the previous month and 31% higher than the average price one year before. In contrast, Propionic Acid prices in Thailand decreased modestly during September 2018, reaching 1,420 USD per metric ton, which means a decline of 1% from the previous month’s price and a rise of 28% from the previous year’s price.
The Propionic Acid prices in Norway experienced a significant rise of 620 USD per metric ton from the prior month's price, to 1,880 USD per metric ton. Such price movement in Norway meant a rise of 49% on a monthly basis and a rise of 50% on a yearly basis.

About Propionic Acid. Propionic Acid, also known as propanoic acid, is a carboxylic acid normally found in nature, mainly in the form of its esters in some essential oils. This fatty acid is also formed in a number of enzymatic and fermentation processes. Widely used in the production of cellulose esters, plastic dispersions and herbicides, Propionic Acid has gained importance over the past years for applications related to preservation of forage cereals and animal feeds.
On an industrial scale, Propionic Acid can be produced, mainly, by carbonylation of ethylene and oxidation of propionaldehyde, and as byproduct from hydrocarbons oxidation.
Classified as corrosive, pure Propionic Acid can be stored in containers made of aluminum (with a purity of 99.5 %) or alloyed steels. This acid may also be temporarily stored in polyethylene containers and in polyethylene small packing drums.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Propionic Acid are listed below.
- Ethylene + carbon monoxide (Reppe hydrocarbonylation),
- Propionaldehyde + oxygen (carbonyl oxidation)
The uses and applications of Propionic Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Propionic Acid are minimum purity of 99.5 wt%.
Most of Propionic Acid production is used as a preservative in stored animal feed and grain. Examples of its agricultural applications include: antibacterial additive (for livestock and poultry drinking water); surface sanitizer (storage areas for silage and grain); poultry-litter additive; and high moisture grains in indoor storage. To a lesser extent, Propionic Acid is also used as food additive and chemical intermediate for herbicides, pharmaceuticals, rubber products, plastics, plasticizers, among others.
