The uses and applications of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate are commercial grade (over 99% purity).

About Ethylhexyl Acrylate. 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate (a.k.a. 2-EHA), the ester of acrylic acid and 2-ethyl hexanol, is one of the most important higher alkyl acrylates. The term acrylates refers to derivatives of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, such as salts and esters. These compounds were known since the nineteenth century, however only in the 1930s difficulties associated with their production and polymerization were overwhelmed. Over the past decades, acrylates have been building blocks of major importance, widely used in emulsion and solution polymers.

2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate is largely used in aqueous polymer dispersions. The most significant route for production of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate is based on 2-ethyl hexanol and acrylic acid, via an acid catalyzed esterification.

2-Ethylhexyl acrylate would normally be distributed in bulk vessels or tank trucks. Like other organic esters, 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate is unstable when exposed to acid or base and nucleophiles such as water or alcohols, in such a way that it must be stored anhydrous to be stable. It may be stored in vessels of steel, aluminum, or other metallic materials and the storage temperature must not exceed 35 °C.

As previously mentioned, commercial production of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate is largely based on the esterification of 2-ethyl hexanol with acrylic acid. Additional production routes are based on upstream integration with acrylic acid manufacturing. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ethylhexyl Acrylate are listed below.

  • 2-ethylhexanol + acrylic acid (ester formation)

The uses and applications of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate are commercial grade (over 99% purity).

2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate is an important acrylic monomer, often used in polymers and copolymers processed further to aqueous polymer dispersions. Polymers and polymer dispersions based on 2-Ethylhexyl Acrylate are used in a number of applications, such as adhesives and as binders for paints, coatings raw materials and in plastics and textiles. This ester is also used as a monomer in construction-industry chemicals (e.g. floor coatings, road-marking substances)
