About Diethanolamine. Diethanolamine (a.k.a. DEA) is an organic compound that is both a dialcohol and secondary amine and can be produced by ethylene oxide and ammonia reaction. Since the mid-1970s, ethanolamines are manufactured with very pure and colorless aspects, so DEA is found as a white solid when purified at room temperature. Due to its tendency to absorb water, DEA is also encountered as a viscous liquid.

Diethanolamine serves multiple purposes, including the production of diethanolamides and salts used in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and hair care products. Additionally, it is employed in oil refineries to extract hydrogen sulfide from sour gas. Compared to ethanolamine, DEA offers the benefit of requiring a higher concentration for equivalent corrosion potential, enabling refineries to effectively remove hydrogen sulfide with reduced energy consumption.

Diethanolamine Handling. Diethanolamine should be stored in well-sealed stainless steel containers, specifically of 316 L or 304 L grades, to prevent air (O2, CO2) and moisture intrusion, ideally under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The storage temperature should be maintained below 50°C. While steel tanks are permissible if iron absorption (up to 10 ppm) is acceptable, aluminum containers are suitable for short-distance transport below 60°C. For longer journeys, phosphatized-lined steel drums are recommended. Depending on product sensitivity and quality requirements, transportation can also utilize steel, stainless steel, or polyethylene containers, provided they have airtight closures to prevent moisture and carbon dioxide absorption. Always Diethanolamine transportation must adhere to specific national regulations during transportation and storage to ensure safety and compliance.

Diethanolamine Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Diethanolamine are listed below.

  • Ammonia + ethylene oxide (epoxidation; coproduced with monoethanolamine/triethanolamine)

Diethanolamine Uses. Typically, Diethanolamine is produced with a 99% minimum purity.
