About Maleic Anhydride. Maleic Anhydride (a.k.a. MAN) is an organic compound, in the acid anhydride class. At room temperature, it is a white crystalline solid, with an acrid odor, soluble in water and in most organic solvents. It is a multifunctional chemical intermediate in several chemical routes.
Maleic Anhydride is stored in the molten state at temperatures between 55°C and 65°C in stainless steel or pure aluminum insulated vessel equipped with steam coils and transported at temperatures ranging from 60 to 80°C in well-insulated tank containers or road tankers provided with heating devices. It can be stored for several weeks in an inert-gas atmosphere without any change in quality. In the solid form, it can be transported as pastilles or briquettes, which are usually packed in polyethylene bags of 25 kg and transported either by rail tanker or by truck.
Maleic Anhydride was first commercially produced in the 1930s via benzene oxidation. However, the increase in the benzene price as well as the recognition of benzene as a hazardous compound boosted the researches for alternative pathways for MAN production. Currently, MAN is most produced using butane as feedstock. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Maleic Anhydride are listed below.
- n-Butane (oxidation),
- Benzene (gas-phase oxidation),
- o-Xylene (gas-phase air oir oxidation, byproduct of phthalic anhydride production),
- Naphthalene fraction (gas-phase air oxidation; byproduct of phthalic anhydride production)
The uses and applications of Maleic Anhydride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Maleic Anhydride are white briquettes or molten liquid.
UPR's are used both in glass-reinforced and in unreinforced applications and it's end uses include a wide range of applications in construction, marine and automobile industries. It is also important to highlight that BDO is one of the world’s fastest growing chemicals in the last years.
