Terephthalic Acid Price Outlook. The price of Terephthalic Acid (United States) increased during April 2019 to 1,090 USD per metric ton, which represents a considerable rise of 8% compared to the previous month’s value. About Terephthalic Acid. Terephthalic Acid (a.k.a. TPA) is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid carrying carboxy groups at positions 1 and 4. It is found as a white and crystalline powder. It is an important monomer in the production of high impact resistance, thermal stability, and weather resistance resins such as the polyesters PET and PBT.
4-CBA, along with para-toluic acid, are the major contaminants of Terephthalic Acid. Such compounds are monofunctional acids, which act as chain terminators limiting molecular mass during the polymerization reaction in the production of polyesters.
Terephthalic Acid Handling. Terephthalic Acid should be stored at temperatures below 30 °C and kept separated from strong oxidants. Transportation of bulk Terephthalic Acid powder is made by rail hopper car, hopper truck, or bulk container with a polyethylene liner. Hopper cars and trucks should be only used to convey this chemical, due to its extreme purity requirements. Shipment is also in 1 t bags, or paper bags containing 25 kg of the product.
