Terephthalic Acid
C6H4(COOH)2
PTA (pure grade); TPA (technical grade)
As previously mentioned, almost all Terephthalic Acid produced is used in the manufacture of saturated polyesters, mainly PET (polyethylene terephthalate) followed by PBT (polybutylene terephthalate). Only a small portion of the Terephthalic Acid is employed in the production of semiaromatic and aromatic polyamides, cyclohexanedimethanol, liquid crystal polymers, copolyester-ether elastomers, terephthaloyl chloride and plasticizers. Moreover, TPA has other applications, such as reagent for alkali in wool, additive to poultry feeds, and chemical intermediate for paints.
Cyclohexane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid; polyarylate, liquid-crystalline; poly (butylene-adipate terephthalate); poly (butylene terephthalate); poly(ethylene terephthalate); terephthaloyl chloride.

Terephthalic Acid (a.k.a. TPA) is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, found as a white and crystalline powder. It is an important monomer in the production of high impact resistance, thermal stability and weather resistance resins such as the polyesters PET and PBT. It is mainly used to produce saturated polyesters, primarily PET (polyethylene terephthalate) followed by PBT (polybutylene terephthalate).
