About Titanium Tetrachloride. Titanium Tetrachloride is a colorless to pale yellow liquid widely produced as an intermediate chemical during manufacturing of titanium dioxide via chloride process. The uses of TiCl4 are increasing, being used in most titanium metal production, as well as catalysts, pearlescent pigments, certain plastics and films. Titanium Tetrachloride is not found naturally in the environment and its production is carried out from the chlorination of titanium-containing minerals such as rutile and ilmenite.
Titanium Tetrachloride Handling. Titanium Tetrachloride must be stored away from food and feedstuffs, moisture, water, oxidizing agents, strong bases, alcohols and metals. Furthermore, it must be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
Titanium Tetrachloride Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Titanium Tetrachloride are listed below.
- Rutile/titanium slag/anatase + chlorine + sponge coke, calcined (chloride process)
Titanium Tetrachloride Uses. The uses and applications of Titanium Tetrachloride may vary according to its specification. Typically, Titanium Tetrachloride is traded with a 99.9% minimum purity. However, other specifications are: SAJ first grade (purity greater than 97.0%); technical grade; and chemically pure grade.
