About Cyclohexane. Cyclohexane is a relatively stable cycloalkane, present in crude oils in concentrations of 0.1–1.0%. On a commercial scale, Cyclohexane production is almost entirely based on the catalytic hydrogenation of benzene, which can be conducted in the liquid phase or in the vapor phase in the presence of hydrogen. Nickel, platinum, or palladium have been used as catalyst in such Cyclohexane processes. Since 1980, Cyclohexane consumption had been around 2–3 % per year, because its growth is limited by the nylon market, and it may be better that new investments are made in Asia and in the Middle East.

Cyclohexane is a colorless, flammable liquid, comprised of a ring of six carbon atoms and has a gasoline-like odor. Cyclohexane is soluble in ether, alcohol, chlorinated/aromatic solvents and insoluble in water. To a lesser extent, this cycloparaffin is produced from the naphtha fraction from crude oil, by superfractionation.

Cyclohexane Handling. Cyclohexane must be stored in cool, dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight, away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition. Explosion-proof ventilating equipment is recommended. Cyclohexane should not be stored near oxidizing agents or acidic material. Carbon steel, stainless steel, glass, Teflon and Viton can be used as packaging materials. Polypropylene tanks or containers should be avoided. It is transported by barge, pipeline and rail for long distances, and by truck for short distances.

Cyclohexane Production. Cyclohexane has been primarily manufactured from hydrogenation of benzene, which can be carried out in both liquid and gaseous phases, in the presence of different metal-based catalysts. This chemical may also be obtained from naphtha fractionation, or by isomerization of methylcyclopentane. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cyclohexane are listed below.

  • Benzene + hydrogen (hydrogenation),
  • Naphtha (fractionation),
  • Methylcyclopentane (isomerization/fractionation)

Cyclohexane Uses. The uses and applications of Cyclohexane may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cyclohexane are 85 wt% minimum purity; 98 wt% minimum purity; and 99.9 wt% minimum purity.
