The uses and applications of Benzyl Alcohol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Benzyl Alcohol are chlorine free grade; technical grade (98% minimum purity); photographic/textile grade (99% minimum purity); and pharmaceutical grade (99.95% minimum purity).

About Benzyl Alcohol. Benzyl Alcohol (a.k.a. Phenylmethanol) is an organic compound, the simplest and commercially most important aromatic alcohol. It is commonly found naturally, in its free and ester forms, in essential oils such as those of gardenia, jasmine, castoreum, and roses. Benzyl alcohol can be produced in many ways. Two processes of Benzyl alcohol production are industrially highlighted: the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride and the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde.

Benzyl alcohol is classified as a slightly flammable material (flash point at 93 °C), so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources. It has a generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status by Flavor and Extract Manufacturers’ Association and is certified by the Council of Europe for use in flavors, since it is very little toxic to humans. Benzyl Alcohol should be stored in stainless-steel tanks, with a blanket of nitrogen over the liquid, as it oxidizes readily. Benzyl Alcohol can be transported by rail, road, or water, in drums protected by stoving finishes and in tank wagons of aluminum or stainless-steel.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Benzyl Alcohol are listed below.

  • Toluene + chlorine + aqueous sodium carbonate (chlorination and hydrolysis),
  • Benzaldehyde + potassium hydroxide (Canizzaro reaction)

The uses and applications of Benzyl Alcohol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Benzyl Alcohol are chlorine free grade; technical grade (98% minimum purity); photographic/textile grade (99% minimum purity); and pharmaceutical grade (99.95% minimum purity).
