About Benzyl Alcohol. Benzyl Alcohol (a.k.a. Phenylmethanol) is an organic compound, the simplest aromatic alcohol. It is a water-white liquid, with faint pleasant aromatic odor, moderately soluble in water. Benzyl alcohol is commonly found naturally, in its free and ester forms, in essential oils such as those of gardenia, jasmine, castoreum and roses. For its polarity, phenylmethanol is commonly used as a solvent in a wide variety of industries, it is also frequently used in photographic and textile industries. In addition, benzyl alcohol is a building block for the production of benzaldehyde, an intermediate in the production of fine chemicals, flavoring additives and fragrances.
