About Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin. Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin (a.k.a. SAN, Acrylonitrile-Styrene Copolymer) is a styrene and acrylonitrile copolymer plastic with proprieties like those of polystyrene. The composition is typically 20-30% of acrylonitrile content by weight. It is usually a transparent plastic, although higher percentages of acrylonitrile can make it yellow. Characteristics like high heat resistance and excellent gloss and chemical resistance make SAN one of the largest-volume styrenic copolymers. Styrene-acrylonitrile resins have a variety of uses, the main ones are in the packaging, electronical and plastic industries.

Like other styrenic copolymers, SAN is produced commercially by free-radical polymerization, which can be carried out by emulsion, suspension, and continuous bulk technologies. According to SAN intended end-use, this random linear amorphous copolymer can be produced with different acrylonitrile contents: higher acrylonitrile levels favor barrier properties and chemical and UV resistance of the copolymer, but its thermal stability deteriorates.

When it comes to storage and transportation, polyethylene sacks, big bags and silo containers can be used for SAN pellets. It is not flammable and only toxic if ingested, however it has been labeled as a possible carcinogen by the Agency for Research on Cancer. In addition, it must be stored in a cool, dry, and well ventilated place.

SAN polymers can be produced by emulsion, suspension, and continuous bulk polymerization processes, using acrylonitrile, and styrene monomers. In this context, different SAN manufacturing routes are mainly related to different sources of those monomers. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Styrene Acrylonitrile Resin are listed below.

  • Styrene + acrylonitrile (emulsion polymerization)
