The uses and applications of Phosphoric Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Phosphoric Acid are fertilizer grade; technical grade ; National Formulary (NF); and Food Chemical Codex (FCC). The main concentrations marketed for these grades are 75%, 80%, and 85% H3PO4, with 54%, 58%, and 62% P2O5, respectively.

About Phosphoric Acid. Phosphoric Acid is a colorless, odorless, and non-volatile inorganic compund, soluble in both water and ethanol. It is not considered a strong acid, but aqueous solutions can severely irritate the skin and damage the eyes.

Phosphoric Acid is one of the most produced mineral type acids. It is manufactured by the digestion of rocks containing P2O5, which are referred as phosphate rocks.

Phosphoric Acid is often stored in steel tanks lined with neoprene, butyl or natural rubber, although stainless steel is also used. The storage area should be cool, dry, well ventilated, out of direct sunlight, and away from sources of heat and ignition. The tanks should be tightly closed, properly labeled and, in cases in which the solids are not thoroughly separated, must also be equipped with some mechanism to keep the solids in suspension (e.g. agitators, circulation pump). The acid produced in wet processes usually contains appreciable amounts of fluoride and chloride ions that greatly increase its corrosivity, making the storage area vulnerable to leakage. The product is shipped in solid form or in solution.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Phosphoric Acid are listed below.

  • Apatite + sulfuric acid (wet phosphoric acid hemihydrate process; coproduced with calcium sulfate hemihydrate),
  • Apatite + sulfuric acid (wet phosphoric acid dihydrate process; coproduced with gypsum)
