About Superphosphate. Single Superphosphate (a.k.a. SSP, Calcium Superphosphate, Normal Superphosphate) is an inorganic compound, in the Superphosphate Fertilizer class. It is commonly dry, granular solid, with gray or brown color, with over 93% water solubility but containing nearly 2.5-fold less phosphorous than TSP (Triple Superphosphate). SSP is a low concentrated phosphorus fertilizer with contents of less than 35% diphosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and it is suitable for feeding all the types of soils that have low pH, except calcareous soils. The presence of both P and sulfur (S) in SSP can offer an agronomic advantage where both of these nutrients are deficient.
Phosphate fertilizers do not present a specific health risk nor do they have undesirable chemical effects. Their transport is therefore not covered by dangerous good regulations. SSP can be stored in bulk form in large unconfined heaps in buildings, in open-top enclosed bays (i.e. bunkers), in heaps in bays built into storage space, hoppers, bins or bags. The bags used for storage and transportation of SSP should be moisture proof and should be sealed or adequately closed. For bulk storage there may be (depending on the location of a fire) a lower risk of the formation of molten material compared with bagged storage, because it is difficult for the fire and heat to penetrate the heap. In case of a fire, severely heated SSP can give off toxic phosphorus oxides and sulphur oxides.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Superphosphate are listed below.
- Phosphate rock + sulfuric acid (salt formation)
The uses and applications of Single Superphosphate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Single Superphosphate are content of P2O5 between 18% and 22%.
Single Superphosphate is used mainly as fertilizer.
