About Dimethyl Terephthalate
About Dimethyl Terephthalate. Dimethyl Terephthalate (a.k.a. DMT) is an organic compound, in the aromatic ester class, specifically classified as a diester. It is a white salt, with faint ester odor, insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents. The main production processes of Dimethyl Terephthalate is the oxidation of p-xylene to terephtalic acid followed by a reaction with methanol. It began to be industrially produced in the end of the 1960s, due to the difficulty of purifying terephthalic acid to produce fibers.
Dimethyl Terephthalate Handling. Dimethyl Terephthalate is classified as flammable (flash point at 154°C), so it must be transported and stored away from heat, sparks, flame, or other sources of ignition. It is considered nontoxic and it is also not highly reactive. No other special measures must be taken in transportation or storage, besides common-sense for good housekeeping. Dimethyl Terephthalate is stored molten in insulated heated tanks. It is transported molten in insulated tank trucks or rail tank cars, with capacities up to 90 ton, or solid as briquettes and flakes, being shipped in 1 ton or 25 kg bags.
Dimethyl Terephthalate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Dimethyl Terephthalate are listed below.
- Methanol + p-xylene (Witten process),
- Methanol + PET scrap (methanolysis)
Dimethyl Terephthalate Uses. The uses and applications of Dimethyl Terephthalate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Dimethyl Terephthalate are technical grade, reagent grade (98%), and pure or synthesis grade (99% minimum purity).
