About Butyl Acetate. Butyl Acetate is an organic compound in the ester class. It is a colorless liquid, with a strong fruity odor, commonly found naturally in many different fruits and in some animal pheromones. For that characteristic, n-butyl acetate is used primarily as a synthetic food flavor. For its moderate polarity, the ester also has diverse applicability in chemical processes.

Commercial Grades. Urethane grade (min. 99.5% purity); industrial grade (min. 99% purity); commercial grade (min. 95% purity); cosmetic grade (min. 90% purity)
Uses. Butyl acetate is used mainly as: artificial flavoring ingredient in foods (candies, gums, ice cream cheese, and many others); solvent for automotive paints/coatings; chemical solvent; thinner; and cosmetic synthetic odor agent. It is also employed as a component in: photographic films; pharmaceutical products; perfumes; adhesives; cellulose nitrate lacquers; defoamer in acute pulmonary edema extracts; and artificial leather.

- n-Butanol + acetic acid (Fischer esterification, catalyzed by sulfuric acid).
Derivatives. n-Butyl cyanoacetate.
