About Glycerol. Glycerol, classified as a trihydroxy alcohol, is a colorless and odorless viscous liquid known for its sweet taste. Its three hydroxyl groups contribute to its water and alcohol solubility, as well as its ability to interact with various organic solvents due to its hygroscopic properties. This compound has extensive applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Glycerol is a versatile compound with diverse applications due to its unique properties. Predominantly, global production sources from natural oils or fats, being about 10% via a synthetic route from propylene. Its multifunctionality, including water solubility and biodegradability, has led to thousands of different uses. Despite its widespread application, Glycerol prices are volatile, leading to occasional substitution with alternatives like glycols and sorbitol. In addition, Glycerol production does not follow its demand, consistently exceeding it, a trend exacerbated by biodiesel production.

Glycerol Handling. Pure Glycerol should be stored in stainless steel or pure aluminum containers. Crude glycerol can be stored in mild steel tanks or drums since the refining process will remove impurities. Exposure to moisture should be avoided. Glycerol is shipped in tank trucks, containers, and drums. The tank trucks and containers are usually made of stainless steel. Galvanized or resin-coated steel as well as plastic is used for drums.

Glycerol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Glycerol are listed below.

  • Oil castor, coconut, cramble, fish, palm kernel, tobacco seed, etc (hydrolysis),
  • Oil castor, coconut, cramble, fish, palm kernel, tobacco seed, etc + methanol (transesterification)

Glycerol Uses. The uses and applications of Glycerol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Glycerol are crude (80 wt% minimum purity), hydrolysis crude (88-91 wt% purity), and technical grade (99.5% minimum purity).
