The uses and applications of Glycerol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Glycerol are crude (80 wt% minimum purity); hydrolysis crude (88 to 91 wt% purity); and technical grade (95 wt% minimum purity).

About Glycerol. Glycerol is an organic compound, in the alcohol class, more specifically a trihydroxy alcohol. It is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid, with a sweet taste. The three hydroxyl groups are responsible for its miscibility with water, alcohol, and most organic solvents, and for its hygroscopic nature. It is highly used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Pure glycerol should be stored in stainless steel or pure aluminum containers. Crude glycerol can be stored in mild steel tanks or drums since the refining process will remove impurities. Exposure to moisture should be avoided. Glycerol is shipped in tank trucks, containers, and drums. The tank trucks and containers are usually made of stainless steel. Galvanized or resin-coated steel as well as plastic is used for drums.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Glycerol are listed below.

  • Oil castor, coconut, cramble, fish, palm kernel, tobacco seed, etc (hydrolysis),
  • Oil castor, coconut, cramble, fish, palm kernel, tobacco seed, etc + methanol (transesterification)
