About Propanol. Propanol (a.k.a. n-Propanol, 1-Propanol) is a primary alcohol with the formula C3H7OH. It appears as a clear, colorless, flammable liquid with a slight odor resembling that of ethanol. It is soluble in water and in a variety of organic solvents. Propanol occurs in nature in crude fusel oils and as fermentation and decomposition products of various vegetables. Industrially, it is produced by hydroformilation of ethylene to propionaldehyde, which is then hydrogenated to Propanol.
Propanol Handling. It should be stored in a cool and well-ventilated place, away from sources of ignition, fireproof, away from strong oxidants, and the container must be tightly closed.
Propanol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Propanol are listed below.
- Oxygenates, Fischer-Tropsch, mixed (fractionation; coproduced with acetic acid/methyl ethyl ketone/acetone/methanol/isopropanol/n-butanol/ethanol/acetaldehyde),
- Allyl alcohol + synthesis gas (hydroformylation; byproduct of 1,4-butanediol production),
- Propionaldehyde (hydrogenation)
Propanol Uses. The uses and applications of Propanol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Propanol are SAJ first grade greater than 99.0%; and HPLC grade greater than 99.5%.
