About Urea Ammonium Nitrate. Urea Ammonium Nitrate (a.k.a. UAN) is a mixture of urea and ammonium nitrate. It is one of the most widely used sources of nitrogen for plant nutrition. Solution of UAN are extremely versatile and can be blended with phosphorous, potassium and other nutrients solutions to better meet specific needs of the crop.
Fertilizers containing ammonium nitrate, especially calcium ammonium nitrate, must be protected from direct sunlight and from repeated temperature changes at 32ºC, because otherwise repeated recrystallization leads to granule desintegration. Urea Ammonium Nitrate should be stored separated from combustible substances and reducing agents. A corrosion agent is usually added to protect steel in storage tanks. UAN is not listed as a hazardous material. The UAN solution cannot be exposed to temperature higher than 237ºF, so it will decompose into ammonia, carbon dioxide and nitric acid.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Urea Ammonium Nitrate are listed below.
- Urea + ammonium nitrate (blending)
The uses and applications of Urea Ammonium Nitrate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Urea Ammonium Nitrate are 28% nitrogen concentration; 30% nitrogen concentration; and 32% nitrogen concentration.
