Potassium Chloride Price Outlook. The price of Potassium Chloride (United States) decreased during April 2019 to 258 USD per metric ton, which represents a slight decline of 2% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, the prices of Potassium Chloride (United States) increased significantly by 21%. Meanwhile, the average price of Potassium Chloride (China) amounted to 350 USD per metric ton, from 357 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the price of Potassium Chloride (China) was flat.
The price of Potassium Chloride (Southeast Asia) declined slightly throughout April 2019, reaching 291 USD per metric ton. The price is 1% lower than the average price in the previous month and 19% higher than the average price one year before. In contrast, the prices of Potassium Chloride (Middle East) decreased modestly during April 2019, reaching 302 USD per metric ton, which means a decline of 2% from the previous month’s price and a rise of 14% from the previous year’s price.
The prices of Potassium Chloride (Europe) experienced a modest decline of 4 USD per metric ton from the prior month's price, to 363 USD per metric ton. Such price movement meant a decrease of 1% on a monthly basis and a decrease of 2% on a yearly basis. On the other hand, in April 2019, the price of Potassium Chloride (Northeast Asia) witnessed a rise of 3 USD per metric ton when compared against the previous month's price, to 329 USD per metric ton. The April 2019 price is 27% higher than the price one year before.
The average price of Potassium Chloride (South America) was 341 USD per metric ton on April 2019 – a little increase of 4 USD per metric ton, or 1%, compared with the previous month. About Potassium Chloride. Potassium Chloride (a.k.a. KCl, muriate of potash (MOP)) is a mineral that occurs in many salt deposits mixed with other salt minerals. Most of the world production comes from mining, but a small percentage is obtained via evaporation of natural brines. Mining methods derived from traditional coal mining are usually employed, but for depths over 1100 m or when in presence of geological anomalies, solution mining is often required. Once the mineral is obtained a series of processing steps are required to remove impurities, such as sodium chloride.
The biggest market for potassium chloride is fertilizers, where this compound is used directly in the formulation of agricultural additives or as a source of potassium for the production of other potassium fertilizers, such as nitrates and sulphates. On a smaller scale, KCl is used as a precursor to potassium hydroxide, an important alkali and substitute for sodium hydroxide in various industrial applications.
Potassium Chloride Handling. Potash fertilizers demand large storage capacities. The majority of potash fertilizer is transported in bulk in self-discharging wagons with a capacity up to 100 t, by rail, truck, or inland waterway. A small proportion of potash salts is supplied in sacks, usually containing 50 kg. Potassium chloride's storage should be away from reducing agent and combustible substances as it accelerates the burning of those substances, resulting in explosion and release of toxic oxides of nitrogen. Potassium chloride is shipped in 25kg bags and 1,000kg super sacks, and is available in bulk format as well. It is nor regulated for transportation.

Potassium Chloride Uses. The uses and applications of Potassium Chloride may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Potassium Chloride are granular (60% min. potash, 1.2-3.5 mm), coarse (60% min. potash, 0.8-1.2 mm), standard (60% min. potash, 0.2-0.8 mm), and chemical grade (>99.9wt%).
