About Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate. MDI (a.k.a. Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate) is an aromatic diisocyanate widely applied in the production of polyurethanes and other polymers and resins. It is produced by the reaction of aniline and formaldehyde, using hydrochloric acid as catalyst, yielding diamine precursors, which are then treated with phosgene, resulting in MDI. It appears as a light-yellow, fused solid, which is soluble in acetone, benzene, kerosene, and nitrobenzene.

Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Handling. It is recommended to store MDI in carbon steel with epoxy or phenolic-epoxy lining materials. Contact with copper, zinc and aluminum in equipments, pipes or tanks should be avoided. Storage temperature should be controlled between 41 and 45 °C, at liquid state, to avoid dimerization of the product.

Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate are listed below.

  • 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, polymeric + phosgene (phosgenation/fractionation)

Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate Uses. The uses and applications of MDI may vary according to its specification. The main forms of MDI are pure MDI (98% monomeric), polymeric (50% polymeric), modified
