Nylon 6
(C6H11NO)n
The uses and applications of Nylon 6 may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Nylon 6 are pellets; fiber; and resins.

About Nylon. Nylon 6 (a.k.a. Polycaprolactam, Polyamide 6) is one of the main commercial nylons along with Nylon 6-6. The term ‘Nylon’ refers basically to polyamides, which are high polymers containing the amide repeat linkage in the polymer backbone. Those polymers not only were the first engineering thermoplastics, but still are the most important ones among these types of material.

Polyamides can be manufactured from different monomers and in different ways, depending on the intended end-uses. In this context, the two most common methods to produce polyamides are the polycondensation reaction from ω-amino acids, which leads to polyamides with amide linkages with the same orientation along the polymer backbone (type AB), and the polycondensation reaction of diacids and diamines, forming polyamides where the amide linkages alternate in orientation along the backbone (type AABB).

Nylon 6 is the polyamide produced from the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam. Caprolactam polymerization can be carried out in both batch and continuous processes. While acids, bases, or water can be used as initiators, the hydrolytic polymerization initiated by water is commonly used.

It must be store in a dry, cool and ventilated area, with containers tightly closed. Also, it is necessary to protect from source of flame, heat and ignition.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Nylon are listed below.

  • Caprolactam (amide formation)

The uses and applications of Nylon 6 may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Nylon 6 are pellets; fiber; and resins.

Nylon 6 is widely used as construction material in several industries, such as automotive, aircraft, electronic/electrotechnical, clothing and medicine/pharmaceutical. Fibers, sheets, filaments and bristles made from Nylon 6 can be used in a broad range of products, including apparel and home furnishings; carpets; and industrial uses (such as in the manufacturing of tires and other reinforced rubber products). Also, it can be used as cast resins (propellers, larger gears, liners).
