The uses and applications of Potassium Hydroxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Potassium Hydroxide are laboratory grade (99.9% minimum purity, in pallets of flake forms); reagent grade (95% minimum purity); commercial grade (85% minimum purity); purified by alcohol (various compositions); and aqueous solution (usually 45% w/v).

About Potassium Hydroxide. Potassium Hydroxide (a.k.a. KOH, Caustic Potash) is an inorganic salt. It is the one of the most produced bases worldwide, and shares similarities with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), although sodium hydroxide is estimated to be produced 100 times more than KOH for its lower cost. Potassium Hydroxide has a strong base/caustic nature, and for that, it has a wide range of uses in different types industry, manufacturing products such as soaps, fertilizers, batteries and many others.

Potassium Hydroxide is hygroscopic, so in transportation and/or storage it absorbs water and undergoes slow changes in structure. It is also corrosive to metals, so its storage should be done in hermetically closed, preferably plastic, containments. Transportation is done in tank truck, rail car, barge and ship. Anhydrous caustic potash is marketed in flake and crystal form. Drum packages include sizes of 50, and 200 kg. Both flake and crystal forms are also available in bulk 500 kg supersacks. The flake form is available in 20 kg bags. It is not flammable and has a low toxicity, although, for its strong alkaline characteristic, could cause harm if in contact with skin or eyes.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Potassium Hydroxide are listed below.

  • Potassium chloride (electrolysis using mercury cell),
  • Potassium chloride (electrolysis using membrane cell)
