About Methyl Isobutyl Ketone. Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (a.k.a. MIBK) is an organic compound, in the ketone class. It is a colorless, slightly soluble in water liquid and occurs naturally in certain fruits. MIBK has been commercially produced for more than sixty years, and behind methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A, is the third largest tonnage product obtained from acetone.

MIBK is industrially synthesized through diverse methods: a three-step process using acetone and hydrogen, a direct one-step synthesis from acetone, a one-step method from isopropyl alcohol, and a mixed-feed approach that yields co-products. The three-step technique, once dominant, also produces other acetone derivatives such as diacetone alcohol. While the one-step method has gained popularity, older facilities continue to employ the three-step approach. Additionally, there are instances of a one-step process using isopropyl alcohol and a specialized mixed-feed method that produces products like methyl n-amyl ketone.

Methyl Isobutyl Ketone Handling. Methyl isobutyl ketone is highly flammable (flash point at 16°C) in its liquid and vapor form, so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources in tightly closed containers. If inhaled, MIBK can cause acute intoxication causing permanent respiratory system damage. Its storage should also be in well-ventilated areas.

Methyl Isobutyl Ketone Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone are listed below.

  • Acetone + hydrogen (single/one-step catalytic process),
  • Acetone + hydrogen (three-step process)

Methyl Isobutyl Ketone Uses. The uses and applications of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone are reagent/technical grade (95% minimum purity) and spectrophotometric grade (99% minimum purity).
