About Methyl Isobutyl Ketone. Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (a.k.a. MIBK) is an organic compound, in the ketone class. It is a colorless, slightly soluble in water liquid and occurs naturally in certain fruits. MIBK has been commercially produced for more than sixty years, and behind methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A, is the third largest tonnage product obtained from acetone. For its medium polarity, methyl isobutyl ketone is vastly used as a solvent, in a wide range of industries.

Uses. Methyl Isobutyl Ketone is mainly employed as solvent for surface coating; solvent for paints, inks, nitrocellulose and varnishes; extraction solvent in mineral processing; solvent/intermediate in organic synthesis; solvent for cosmetics, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, lacquers and others; synthetic flavoring agent in foods; manufacturing of antioxidants; denaturant for alcohol; and pesticide production.
