About PTFE. PTFE (a.k.a. Polytetrafluoroethylene, Teflon) is a fluorinated thermoplastic. It has a linear molecular structure which brings a high degree of cristalinity. The polymer is characterized by its excellent thermal and chemical resistance, low coefficient of friction and hydrophobic surface. Polytetrafluoroethylene was discovered by accident in 1938, and it is now widely used as a non-stick coating, for example on pans and other utensils.

As a protective coating material, PTFE boast a broad chemical resistance to most chemicals, while being insoluble in all solvents. These characteristics result in low friction coefficients and antistick properties making PTFE a highly valuable compound, but also make it more difficult to process when compared to other thermoplastics.

PTFE Handling. PTFE is considered relatively nontoxic; it is also not flammable and not highly reactive. It should be stored in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Its storage and transportation should be away from strong oxidizing agents and away from sunlight, rain and high temperature. Complete packing is required when transporting and loading need to be stable. Container shall be protected from felling down or damage during transportation. Besides that, no other special measures must be taken in transportation or storage, besides common-sense for good housekeeping, as PTFE is not restricted.

PTFE Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of PTFE are listed below.

  • Tetrafluorethylene (emulsion polymerization)

PTFE Uses. The uses and applications of PTFE may vary according to its specification. The main forms of PTFE are: granular resins, fine powder resins, aqueous dispersions, and filled resins. Filled resins are the result of combining other materials with the three aforementioned forms of the polymer to form composites. Examples of common fillers are: fiberglass, graphite, powdered metals, and abestos.
