About Naphthalene. Naphthalene (a.k.a. Naphthaline, Naphthene) is the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, with its structure consisting of a fused pair of benzenes. It is a white crystalline solid with a strong coal tar odor, soluble in benzene, alcohol and ether , but insoluble in water. Naphatalene is the main ingredient of traditional mothballs. It is obtained from coal tar oils boiling between 200 °C and 250 °C (middle oil) by crystallization and distillation, or from petroleum fractions after various catalytic processing operations. Exposure to naphthalene is dangerous as it is associated with damages on the liver, neurological system and retina. It is anticipated to be a human carcinogen as well.
Naphthalene Handling. Naphthalene should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. It must be kept separated from oxidizing agents and it is recommended to store it under a nitrogen gas blanket. This product is a combustible solid. It is generally transported in molten form in tank trucks or tank cars that are equipped with steam coils. Depending on the transportation distance and the insulation on the car or truck, the naphthalene may solidify and require reheating before unloading.
Naphthalene Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Naphthalene are listed below.
- Naphthalene fraction/carbolic oil (crystallisation/ separation)
Naphthalene Uses. The uses and applications of Naphthalene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Naphthalene are crude naphthalene; technical grade (95 wt% minimum purity); and refined grade (99.9 wt% minimum purity).
