Price Dynamics. The Sodium Nitrate price in United States decreased during September 2018 to 519 USD per metric ton, which represents a decline of 5% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Sodium Nitrate prices in United States decreased significantly by 27%. Meanwhile, in Germany, the average price of Sodium Nitrate amounted to 673 USD per metric ton, from 684 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the Sodium Nitrate price in Germany is 4% lower than the price one month before.
The price of Sodium Nitrate in China rose slightly throughout September 2018, reaching 429 USD per metric ton. The price in China is 3% higher than the average price in the previous month and 4% lower than the average price one year before. In contrast, Sodium Nitrate prices in Turkey increased significantly during September 2018, reaching 646 USD per metric ton, which means a rise of 9% from the previous month’s price and a rise of 14% from the previous year’s price.
The Sodium Nitrate prices in Thailand experienced a decline of 34 USD per metric ton from the prior month's price, to 575 USD per metric ton. Such price movement in Thailand meant a decrease of 6% on a monthly basis and a rise of 5% on a yearly basis. On the other hand, in September 2018, the Sodium Nitrate price in Chile witnessed a decline of 12 USD per metric ton when compared against the previous month's price, to 536 USD per metric ton. The September 2018 price in Chile is 8% lower than the price one year before.
In Poland, the average price of Sodium Nitrate was 579 USD per metric ton on September 2018 – a little increase of 8 USD per metric ton, or 1%, compared with the previous month. On a year-over-year basis, the Sodium Nitrate price in Poland is 1% higher than the price one year before.

About Sodium Nitrate. Sodium Nitrate is a white granular powder found in naturally occurring deposits, mainly in Chile, but also produced synthetically. Historically, it was used as a natural fertilizer and for explosives production. Chilean Nitrate is soluble in water and slightly soluble in oxygenated solvents. It is not combustible, but it enhances the combustion of other substances if present.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Nitrate are listed below.
- Caliche ore (ore extraction/mineral beneficiation),
- Sodium carbonate/sodium hydroxide + nitric acid (salt formation),
- Sodium nitrite + nitric acid (salt formation)
Sodium Nitrate is used in aluminium etchants; as fertilizer; as clarifying agent for glass, enemal and pottery production; in preservative and color fixative for cured meat and fish; as well as tobacco burning aid.
