About Sodium Nitrate. Sodium Nitrate is a white granular powder found in naturally occurring deposits, mainly in Chile, rendering the name Chilean saltpeter, but also produced synthetically. Obtaining it pure from the mineral deposits of caliche is a complex process with several steps, which was improved over time to accept raw material with low sodium nitrate content. The first improvement was the Shanks hot leaching process, which was replaced by the Guggenheim low-temperature leaching process, still in use today and capable of processing caliche with a Sodium Nitrate content as low as 7% by weight.

On the other hand, synthetic Sodium Nitrate can be produced by reacting nitric acid with sodium hydroxide. The usual route, however, is to use the waste gases from nitric acid production plants, which contain nitrogen oxides and can be treated with caustic soda or sodium carbonate solutions to yield sodium nitrate.

Historically, Sodium Nitrate was used as a natural fertilizer and for explosives production. Chilean Nitrate is soluble in water and slightly soluble in oxygenated solvents. It is not combustible, but it enhances the combustion of other substances if present.

Sodium Nitrate Handling.

Sodium Nitrate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Nitrate are listed below.

  • Caliche ore (ore extraction/mineral beneficiation),
  • Sodium carbonate/sodium hydroxide + nitric acid (salt formation),
  • Sodium nitrite + nitric acid (salt formation)

Sodium Nitrate Uses. The uses and applications of Sodium Nitrate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of p-Cresol are granulated (98 wt%, from Chile saltpeter) and synthetic (99.5 wt%).
