The uses and applications of Polyisoprene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polyisoprene are United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; and food (FDA) grade.

About Polyisoprene. Polyisoprene (a.k.a. IR, Synthetic Rubber) is a thermoplastic elastomer, and the main component of natural rubber. It is formed by polymerization of isoprene in the presence of Ziegler-Natta catalyst. Synthetic Polyisoprene and natural rubber have the same type of applications, being used mainly in tires, belts, gaskets, hoses, foam rubber, molded and mechanical goods, bottle nipples, gloves, caulking, sealants, etc.

Polyisoprene's recommended storage is in lined metal can, plastic pail, or polyliner drums. The polymer should also be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area, away from strong oxidizing materials.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Polyisoprene are listed below.

  • Isoprene (Ziegler polymerisation)

The uses and applications of Polyisoprene may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polyisoprene are United States Pharmacopeia (USP) grade; and food (FDA) grade.

Polyisoprene is used mainly as: elastomer for light colored goods (such as hoses, belts, gloves, etc); rubber bands; calendered rubber sheeting; fine fabric thread; golf ball thread; emollient in cosmetics; food-contact paper/paperboard; and rheology modifier for lubricants/oils. It is also used in adhesives; footwear; sponge products; tires; and pharmaceuticals goods.
