About Bisphenol A. BPA (a.k.a. Bisphenol A, Diphenylolpropane) is a synthetic organic compound. It was first synthesized in 1891 by Dianin from the acid catalysed condensation of phenol and acetone and has been produced industrially to be used as a starting material in the synthesis of epoxy resins since about 1920. Its commercial development has increased continually following the growth of the plastics industry.
Bisphenol A is colorless, flammable, solid at room temperature, with a mild phenolic odor, soluble in organic solvents and poorly soluble in water (0.344 wt% at 83 °C). As a high production volume chemical, Bisphenol A is used in a wide range of plastic materials.
Bisphenol A is commonly stored and sold as a white solid in flaked or prilled form. The storage for unlimited time in stainless steel containers is not recommended. Bisphenol A dust can create explosive mixtures with air, so the chemical must kept in containers tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. It must also be stored in an area without drain or sewer access, separated from acid anhydrides, acid chlorides, strong oxidants, strong bases and food and feedstuffs. It should be transported away from heat sources and strong oxidizers and its pneumatic conveying must be under nitrogen because of the danger of dust explosions.
As previously mentioned, commercial production of Bisphenol A is based on condensation of phenol and acetone. Alternative routes starting from phenol and methylacetylene and phenol and cumene have also been reported but have not become commercially available. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Bisphenol A are listed below.
- Phenol + acetone (carbonyl condensation, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid)
The uses and applications of BPA may vary according to its specification. The main forms of BPA are epoxy grade (95% minimum purity) and polycarbonate grade (99.5% minimum purity).
Bisphenol A is mainly used to produce high-grade plastics. It is employed in the production of polymers, especially polycarbonates and epoxy resins, but also rubbers and resins. It is also used as flame retardant, fungicide, antioxidant, antimicrobial (and antioxidant) in cosmetics, and as an intermediate for high-grade thermosets, thermoplastics, and raw materials for varnishes.
