Isobutane is the simplest alkane with a tertiary carbon. It is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum-like odor, shipped as a liquefied gas under vapor pressure. It is an important component of natural gasoline, refinery gases, wet natural gas, and is also obtained by isomerization of butane. Isobutane is highly flammable and presents explosive risk.
