The uses and applications of Isobutane may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Isobutane are technical grade (N1.5 - 95 mol% concentration of Isobutane); pure grade (N2.0 - 99 mol% concentration of Isobutane; and instrument grade (N2.5 - 99.5 mol% concentration of Isobutane).

About Isobutane. Isobutane is the simplest alkane with a tertiary carbon. It is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum-like odor, shipped as a liquefied gas under vapor pressure. It is an important component of natural gasoline, refinery gases, wet natural gas, and is also obtained by isomerization of butane. Isobutane is highly flammable and presents explosive risk.

Isobutane must be stored under pressure in cylinders in cool, well-ventilated dry area of non-combustible construction. These containers must be kept away from sources of heat or ignition, from oxidizers, such as oxygen or chlorine, and must be protected against physical damage.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Isobutane are listed below.

  • n-Butane (isomerization),
  • Butanes (fractionation)
