Chloroform (a.k.a. Trichloromethane) is an organic compound, of the organochlorides class, most specifically a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is a colorless, volatile liquid, with a pleasant ethereal odor, miscible with most organic solvents, but only slightly soluble in water. Although chloroform is nonflammable, its hot vapor in combination with vaporized alcohol burns with a green tinged flame. Chloroform can be found naturally, produced by some species of seaweed and fungi. It was discovered in 1831 and industrial production began in 1900, in the US, making chloroform one of the first organic chemicals produced on a large scale. Trichloromethane is a very versatile compound, having a wide variety of uses in the chemical industry.
