About Chloroform. Chloroform (a.k.a. Trichloromethane) is an organic compound, of the organochlorides class, most specifically a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is a colorless, volatile liquid, with a pleasant ethereal odor, miscible with most organic solvents, but only slightly soluble in water. Although Chloroform is nonflammable, its hot vapor in combination with vaporized alcohol burns with a green tinged flame.
Chloroform can be found naturally, produced by some species of seaweed and fungi. It was discovered in 1831 and industrial production began in 1900, in the US, making Chloroform one of the first organic chemicals produced on a large scale. Trichloromethane is a very versatile compound, having a wide variety of uses in the chemical industry. Nowadays, Chloroform is usually obtained by two processes: methane/chloromethane chlorination or methane oxychlorination. The two processes generate dichloromethane as a co-product and tetrachloromethane as a by-product.
Chloroform Handling. Chloroform is usually transported by rail cars, barges, trucks, oceangoing ships and drums. When handling it, extreme care must be taken, since chloroform is a suspected carcinogen. It should be stored in cool places, in sealed containers. Aluminum is not recommended for storage; it should be done in glass containers (dark green or amber) or in mild or plain steel (galvanized or suitably lined). In storage, all containers must be equipped with a vent dryer packed with an appropriate desiccant (such as calcium chloride).
Chloroform Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Chloroform are listed below.
- Methane (or chloromethane) + chlorine (thermal chlorination),
- Methane + hydrogen chloride (oxychlorination)
Chloroform Uses. Chloroform is commonly traded in a 99% purity grade.
