About MDI Polyurethane. Polymethylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (a.k.a. PU MDI) is the polymeric form of MDI (Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate, a. k. a. Diphenylmethane Diisocyanate) and one of the leading polyurethanes manufactured worldwide. As analogous polymers, PMDI has a wide variety of properties, ranging from a fawn to brown undistilled liquid to rigid foams. The physical and mechanical properties of the polymer depend mainly on its density, molecular weight, and weight distribution, delivering an extensive set of applications, such as thermal insulation and resin curing agent.

The production of MDI begins with the reaction between aniline and formaldehyde to form methylenedianiline (MDA), which is then combined with phosgene. The result is a mixture of monomeric and polymeric MDI, called PMDI. From this mixture, the monomeric forms, 2,4' and 4,4'-MDI, can be obtained in a fraction called MMDI. Additionally, it is common to produce carbodiimide-modified isocyanates from MMDI.

All the aforementioned MDIs are mainly used to produce polyurethanes through reaction with a polyol, resulting in polymers with different characteristics and applications.

MDI Polyurethane Handling. It is stored as a viscous liquid in sealed drums, intermediate bulk containers (tote tanks), and/or bulk storage tanks. It is necessary to keep PMDI at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

MDI Polyurethane Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of MDI Polyurethane are listed below.

  • 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane, polymeric + phosgene
  • (phosgenation/fractionation; coproduced with 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate)

MDI Polyurethane Uses. The uses and applications of Polymethylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Polymethylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate are PMDI typically contains 30–70 % dimer components, 14–40 % trimer components, and 15–30 % polymer components.
