The uses and applications of Sodium Sulfides may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Sodium Sulfides are crystals containing 30-34% sodium sulfide or flakes containing 59-62% sodium sulfide.

About Sodium Sulfides. Sodium Sulfides (a.k.a. Na2S) are salts that are somewhat interchangeable in many applications. This group is composed of sodium sulphide (Na2S), sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), and sodium tetrasulfide (Na2S4). They are used in wastewater treatment in heavy metal precipitation and in the removal of nitrogen oxides from emissions. They also have applications in the paper, mining, and leather industries.

Sodium Sulfides should be stored in well-ventilated areas away from acids, oxidants, and carbon dioxide. Each sodium sulfide grade has a different transport regulation. In general, intermediate bulk containers are permitted for land and sea transport and portable tanks are permitted for land transport, with restriction for solid polysulfide in portable tanks. It is recommended to avoid using zinc, aluminum, and copper containers for the storage and transportation of Sodium Sulfides. Steel or polyethylene should be used instead.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Sodium Sulfides are listed below.

  • Sodium sulfate + coal (reduction),
  • Sodium carbonate + barium sulfide
  • Sodium + sulfur
  • Sodium hydroxide + hydrogen sulfide

The uses and applications of Sodium Sulfides may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Sodium Sulfides are crystals containing 30-34% sodium sulfide or flakes containing 59-62% sodium sulfide.
