About Methacrylic Acid. Methacrylic Acid (a.k.a. MAA) is an organic compound in the carboxylic acid class, a viscous, colorless liquid, with an acrid unpleasant odor. MAA can be found naturally in chamomile oil, and its industrial production began in the 1930s. Currently, it is mainly used as a precursor to its esters, most notably methyl methacrylate (MMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Methacrylic Acid is inhibited with alkylphenols, hydroquinone, or the methyl ether of hydroquinone (MEHQ), prolonging the shelf life of commercial products. It should be stored under an atmosphere containing 5 to 21% oxygen, in temperatures between 20 and 25 °C, and in glass or stainless steel containers. Methacrylic Acid is transported in tank trucks and rail cars in insulated containers. Methacrylic acid is highly flammable (flash point at 68°C) in its liquid and vapor form, so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources in tightly closed containers. Its storage should also be in well ventilated areas.

Price Dynamics. The Methacrylic Acid price in United States decreased during December 2018 to 2,450 USD per metric ton, which represents a considerable decline of 10% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Methacrylic Acid prices in United States decreased by 5%. Meanwhile, in Germany, the average price of Methacrylic Acid amounted to 2,360 USD per metric ton, from 2,390 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the Methacrylic Acid price in Germany is 6% lower than the price one month before.

The price of Methacrylic Acid in China declined throughout December 2018, reaching 3,040 USD per metric ton.  The price in China is 6% lower than the average price in the previous month and 23% lower than the average price one year before. In contrast, Methacrylic Acid prices in India decreased modestly during December 2018, reaching 3,100 USD per metric ton, which means a decline of 0.6% from the previous month’s price and a decline of 6% from the previous year’s price. 

The Methacrylic Acid prices in Brazil experienced a significant rise of 340 USD per metric ton from the prior month's price, to 3,540 USD per metric ton. Such price movement in Brazil meant a rise of 11% on a monthly basis and a rise of 2% on a yearly basis.
