About Copper Sulfate. Copper II Sulfate (a.k.a. Cupric Sulfate) is an inorganic compound that can be found in many forms, with pentahydrate being the most common of them. The pentahydrate is a blue crystalline solid that can be converted to the monohydrate form by heating at temperatures above 110°C and to the anhydrous salt above 250°C.
The pentahydrate form of copper sulfate can be obtained either by introducing sulfuric acid to the solution or through the process of evaporation. This variant is widely favored in industry due to its cost-effectiveness, the ready availability of its raw materials, straightforward production methods, and efficient utilization of byproducts, mainly from copper electrowinning solutions. Commonly used starting materials for its synthesis include copper metal, sulfuric acid, and air. Notable commercial methods for its production include the Harike process, the two-tower technique, and the trickle method.
The anhydrous form of copper sulfate is obtained by carefully heating the pentahydrate to about 250 °C or by reacting copper metal with hot concentrated sulfuric acid, though the purification process can be challenging. While this variant has niche applications as a desiccant for extracting moisture from organic solvents and as a moisture-sensitive indicator, its market representation remains modest. Similarly, the monohydrate variant, derived from heating the pentahydrate to approximately 150 °C, possesses functionalities comparable to the pentahydrate. Despite benefiting from lower transportation costs, its market share remains below 5%.
Copper Sulfate Handling. Cupric Sulfate should be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. It must be kept away from moisture, hydroxylamine, magnesium, copper oxides, and sulfur oxides.
Copper Sulfate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Copper Sulfate are listed below.
- Copper, scrap + sulfuric acid (salt formation),
- Copper, scrap + sulfur (sulfide formation/air oxidation),
- Copper oxide ores + sulfuric acid (salt formation),
- Copper ore leachant + sulfuric acid (solvent extraction/ salt formation)
Copper Sulfate Uses. The uses and applications of Copper II Sulfate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Copper II Sulfate are pentahydrate, monohydrate and anhydrous. Its commonly avaiable in agricultural grade (96% pure), industrial grade (98% pure); chemically pure (CP) grade (>99% pure).
