About Copper Sulfate. Copper II Sulfate (a.k.a. Cupric Sulfate) is an inorganic compound that can be found in many forms, with pentahydrate being the most common of them. The pentahydrate is a blue crystalline solid that can be converted to the monohydrate form by heating at temperatures above 110°C and to the anhydrous salt above 250°C.
Cupric Sulfate should be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. It must be kept away from moisture, hydroxylamine, magnesium, copper oxides, and sulfur oxides.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Copper Sulfate are listed below.
- Copper, scrap + sulfuric acid (salt formation),
- Copper, scrap + sulfur (sulfide formation/air oxidation),
- Copper oxide ores + sulfuric acid (salt formation),
- Copper ore leachant + sulfuric acid (solvent extraction/ salt formation)
The uses and applications of Copper II Sulfate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Copper II Sulfate are technical grade; chemically pure (CP) grade; National Formulary (NF) grade; monohydrate; pentahydrate; and aqueous solution (13% copper sulfate).
