About Oxalic Acid. Oxalic Acid (a.k.a. Ethanedioic Acid) is the simplest dicarboxylic acid. It forms a colorless crystalline solid that, when dissolved in water, forms a colorless solution. Oxalic acid is available commercially as the dihydrate. It occurs naturally in plants and vegetables and it has important roles in human, plant and algal metabolism. Oxalic Acid is a strong reducing agent.
Oxalic Acid Handling. Oxalic Acid should be stored in cool, dry and well-ventilated place. It must be kept away from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Dry Oxalic Acid is packed and transported in polyethylene lined multilayered bags, in polyethylene drums, or polyvinyl chloride drums. Solutions of Oxalic Acid are stored and conveyed in stainless steel containers.
Oxalic Acid Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Oxalic Acid are listed below.
- Guethol + glyoxylic acid (carbonyl addition/oxidation/ decarboxylation),
- Acetaldehyde + nitric acid (oxidation; byproduct of glyoxal production),
- Sucrose/molasses/starch + nitric acid (oxidative cleavage),
- Dimethyl oxalate (transesterification/ester hydrolysis),
- Sodium Formate + sulfuric acid (thermal dehydrogenation/acid formation)
Oxalic Acid Uses. The uses and applications of Oxalic Acid may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Oxalic Acid are technical (crystals and powder) grade and chemically pure (CP) grade.
Intratec Methodology. Intratec Primary Commodity Prices are produced from a data-driven, mathematical approach, which starts with the extraction of data from various primary sources, including official trade records, futures market, statistics bureaus, governmental and international agencies. Such large volume of data is validated through advanced data processing techniques, and treated by means of statistical analysis for outliers removal. When faced with input gaps, data scientists and engineers employ mathematical models or machine learning techniques to estimate prices and ensure the completeness of the price assessments presented.
