About Oxalic Acid. Oxalic Acid (a.k.a. Ethanedioic Acid) is the simplest dicarboxylic acid. It forms a colorless crystalline solid that, when dissolved in water, forms a colorless solution. Oxalic acid is available commercially as the dihydrate. It occurs naturally in plants and vegetables and it has important roles in human, plant and algal metabolism. Oxalic Acid is a strong reducing agent.

Oxalic Acid should be stored in cool, dry and well-ventilated place. It must be kept away from strong oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Dry Oxalic Acid is packed and transported in polyethylene lined multilayered bags, in polyethylene drums, or polyvinyl chloride drums. Solutions of Oxalic Acid are stored and conveyed in stainless steel containers.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Oxalic Acid are listed below.

  • Guethol + glyoxylic acid (carbonyl addition/oxidation/ decarboxylation),
  • Acetaldehyde + nitric acid (oxidation; byproduct of glyoxal production),

Price Dynamics. The Oxalic Acid price in United States decreased during November 2018 to 1,840 USD per metric ton, which represents a considerable decline of 10% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, Oxalic Acid prices in United States increased significantly by 37%. Meanwhile, in Italy, the average price of Oxalic Acid amounted to 1,330 USD per metric ton, from 1,400 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the Oxalic Acid price in Italy is 10% lower than the price one month before.

The price of Oxalic Acid in China rose considerably throughout November 2018, reaching 636 USD per metric ton.  The price in China is 13% higher than the average price in the previous month and 20% lower than the average price one year before. In contrast, Oxalic Acid prices in India decreased modestly during November 2018, reaching 631 USD per metric ton, which means a decline of 2% from the previous month’s price and a decline of 19% from the previous year’s price.
