About Cellulose Acetate. Cellulose Acetate is one of the most important organic ester. It is manufactured by reacting cellulose with acetic acid or acetic anhydride, with sulfuric acid catalyst. The cellulose is fully acetylated, yielding three acetate groups per glucose unit, and at the same time, the sulfuric acid causes appreciable degradation of the cellulose polymer so that the product contains only 200–300 glucose units per polymer chain. At this point in the process, the cellulose acetate ordinarily is partially hydrolyzed by the addition of water until an average of 2–2.5 acetate groups per glucose unit remain. This product is thermoplastic and soluble in acetone.
The transportation of cellulose ester moldings in general is not governed by any regulation for the transportation of hazardous goods. The storage of these compounds present no problems, however, it is recommended that they should be predried in accordance to the particular manufacturer´s guidelines before processing.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cellulose Acetate are listed below.
- Acetic anhydride + bleached wood pulp/cotton linters (ester formation/partial hydrolysis)
The uses and applications of Cellulose Acetate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cellulose Acetate are filtered/unfiltered; plastic (52–54% acetic acid); lacquer (54–56% acetic acid); film (55.5–56.6% acetic acid); water resisting (56.5–59% acetic acid); and triacetate (60.0–62.5% acetic acid).
Cellulose Acetate is used mainly in: acetate fiber; lacquers; protective-coating solutions; photographic films; transparent sheeting; thermoplastic molding composition; cigarette filters; magnetic tapes; and osmotic-cell membranes.
