About Xylene. Mixed Xylenes (a.k.a. Xylene) is a group of benzenes homologue with formula C8H10. It is a mix of ο-xylene, m-xylene and ρ-xylene. All xylene isomers are colorless and highly flammable. Occurring naturally in petroleum, xylenes are produced primarily from catalytic reforming and coal carbonization, in the manufacture of coke fuel. Each isomer is an important raw material in many chemical routes. Ρ-xylene can be separated from the mix to produce terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate, widely used in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Ο-xylene is used mainly to produce phthalic anhydride which then can be used to produce esters that are plasticizers for synthetic polymers. M-xylene is oxidized to isophthalic acid which is alto converted to esters.
Chemical Formula. C8H10
Commercial Grades. Commercial or mixed xylene usually contains 40-65% m-xylene and up to 20% of ο-xylene, ρ-xylene and ethyl benzene.
Uses. Insecticide carrier, process solvent (esterification, condensation reactions), solvent (alkyd resins, acrylic resins, paints, lacquers, printing inks and adhesives).
- Toluene (disproportionation, coproduced with benzene)
- Aromatics, mixed (separation, coproduced with other C9+ aromatics/toluene/benzene)
- Toluene + C9+ aromatics (disproportionation)
Derivatives. Ethyl benzene; m-xylene; o-xylene; p-xylene.
Methodology. The chemicals pricing data Intratec provides its customers with is obtained from the collection/refining of foreign trade data officially reported by the respective countries. Usually, such information is reported by governmental agencies and/or institutions related to foreign trade, or by statistical surveys conducted by countries/organizations.
