Mixed Xylenes (a.k.a. Xylene) is a group of benzenes homologues, more specifically, it is a mix of ο-xylene,  m-xylene and p-xylene. All xylene isomers are colorless and highly flammable. Occurring naturally in petroleum, xylenes are produced primarily from catalytic reforming and coal carbonization, in the manufacture of coke fuel. Each isomer is an important raw material in many chemical routes. Ρ-xylene can be separated from the mix to produce terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate, widely used in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Ο-xylene is used mainly in the production of phthalic anhydride, which then can be used to produce esters, employed as plasticizers for synthetic polymers. M-xylene is oxidized to isophthalic acid which is also converted to esters.
