About Xylene. Mixed Xylenes (a.k.a. Xylene) is a group of benzenes homologs, more specifically, it is a mix of ο-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene. All xylene isomers are colorless and highly flammable. Occurring naturally in petroleum, xylenes are produced primarily from catalytic reforming and coal carbonization, in the manufacture of coke fuel. Each isomer is an important raw material in many chemical routes. Ρ-xylene can be separated from the mix to produce terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate, widely used in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Ο-xylene is used mainly in the production of phthalic anhydride, which then can be used to produce esters, employed as plasticizers for synthetic polymers. M-xylene is oxidized to isophthalic acid which is also converted to esters.

Xylene Handling. All xylene isomers should be stored in closed containers with appropriate labels and away from heat. It is advised a detached or restricted area for this chemical storage and mechanical ventilation to get rid of toxic vapors or fumes from xylene or similar chemicals. Moreover, methods of handling flammable and combustible hydrocarbons must be followed, such as electrically bound or ground containers to transfer/store these solutions.

Xylene Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Xylene are listed below.

  • Toluene (disproportionation, coproduced with benzene),
  • Aromatics, mixed (separation, coproduced with other C9+ aromatics/toluene/benzene),
  • Toluene + C9+ aromatics (disproportionation)

Xylene Uses. The uses and applications of Xylenes may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Mixed Xylenes are isomer-grade (max. ethylbenzene content of 18%) and solvent-grade (max. non-aromatics content of 4.0 vol%). Typically, solutions content ranges from 40 to 65% m-xylene and up to 20% of ο-xylene, p-xylene, and ethyl benzene.
