About Formaldehyde Resins. Formaldehyde resins are a group of synthetic resins that are produced by the polymerization of formaldehyde either alone or with various compounds. Two key formaldehyde polymers are phenol-formaldehyde resins and paraformaldehyde. The former is produced by the copolymerization of phenol and formaldehyde, while the latter is the result of the polymerization of formaldehyde alone.
Phenol-formaldehyde resins were the first commercialized synthetic plastics and are still very important industrial polymers. The production of these resins are the main use for formaldehyde. These resins are widely used in the manufacturing of adhesives, coatings, and molded products due to their excellent adhesive properties, durability, and versatility.
On the other hand, paraformaldehyde is a convenient source of formaldehyde as it decomposes into it under heat while being solid and therefore easier to transport and handle than gaseous formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. It has applications in disinfection and sterilization, leather tanning, and agriculture.
Formaldehyde Resins Handling. Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins should be stored in cool places, away from direct sunlight. It can be stored for 1 week at temperatures around 25°C, but lower temperatures are required for longer periods of time to prevent degradation. Solid Resins which are sold in broken pieces, flakes, pastilles, or granules, can be packed in sacks, drums, or large containers. For paraformaldehyde, temperatures in the range of 2 to 8 °C and an atmosphere of inert gas are recommended. Polyoxymethylene should be kept away from heat sources and is usually transported and stored in its pallet form, or as the final product already molded.
Formaldehyde Resins Uses. The uses and applications of Formaldehyde Resins vary according to type and specification. The main forms of Phenol-Formaldehyde Resins are epoxy hardener grade; impact resistant grade; and electrical grade. The main forms of Paraformaldehyde are 90 to 99 wt% aqueous solution. The main forms of Polyoxymethylene are 25-100% (percentage of homopolymer POM compared to copolymer POM).
