About Hexamethylenediamine. Hexamethylenediamine (a.k.a. HMDA) is a colorless solid at room temperature, which presents a typical amine odor. It is soluble in both water and alcohol, but poorly soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons. Although the first record of HMDA synthesis was in 1900, it only gained importance in the late 1930s, after the synthesis of nylon 66, which is based on the combination of adipic acid with HMDA. The success of nylon allowed the expansion of HMDA production.
HMDA is a corrosive chemical and must be handled using proper safety equipment. As a hygroscopic compound, it must be stored under inert gas and separated from strong oxidants and strong acids. The container must be kept tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place and the formation of dust and aerosols must be avoided. It can be shipped in solution, solid or bulk form, depending on the grade.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Hexamethylenediamine are listed below.
- Butadiene + Hydrogen Cyanide (hydrogenation),
- Adipic Acid + Ammonia (hydrogenation),
- Acrylonitrile (electrodimerization + hydrogenation),
- Adiponitrile (hydrogenation)
The uses and applications of Hexamethylenediamine may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Hexamethylenediamine are technical grade (70% aqueous solution); 80% aqueous solution; 90% aqueous solution; and reagent grade (98% aqueous solution)
HMDA remained almost exclusively as an intermediate for nylon production for many years. This situation only changed after the development of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), which is produced from HMDA and widely employed in the production of light-stable polyurethanes.
