The uses and applications of Copper (I) Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Copper (I) Oxide are technical grade; CP (97% minimum purity, for pigments); USN Type I (97%); and USN Type II (90%).

About Copper Oxide. Copper (I) Oxide (a.k.a. Cuprous Oxide) is a naturally occurring red or brown mineral, although it may become yellow to orange or red to purple when commercially prepared. Cuprous Oxide is stable in dry air but forms copper (II) oxide in the presence of oxygen in moist air. It is dissolvable in ammonia and hydrochloric acid but insoluble in water.

Copper (I) Oxide should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area inside of tightly closed containers. It should be also kept away from incompatible materials such as strong oxidizing agents, metal powders, aluminum, and magnesium.

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Copper Oxide are listed below.

  • Copper (thermal oxidation),
  • Copper + ammonia + ammonium sulfate (ammonium sulfate oxidation process),
  • Copper + ammonia + ammonium carbonate (ammonium carbonate distillation process)

The uses and applications of Copper (I) Oxide may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Copper (I) Oxide are technical grade; CP (97% minimum purity, for pigments); USN Type I (97%); and USN Type II (90%).

Copper (I) Oxide is used in marine antifouling paints; as a fertilizer additive micronutrient; as a fungicide (yellow or orange copper (I) oxide); as a catalyst; and as pigment for ceramics and glasses (red copper (I) oxide).
