About Ammonium Sulfate. Ammonium Sulfate (a.k.a. Ammonium Tetraoxosulfate(VI), Mascagnite) is an inorganic salt with brownish to white crystal solid appearance (depending on the purity), odorless, soluble in water and insoluble in most organic solvents. Having nitrogen (21% w/w) and sulfur (24% w/w) in its structure, very important nutrients in plant growth, ammonium sulfate is widely used as a fertilizer.

Ammonium sulfate is not flammable, although it should be kept away from heat sources, since if heated to decomposition, it releases toxic fumes (sulfur dioxide, ammonium bisulfate, ammonia, sulfur trioxide). It is also classified by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a health category 1 (“exposure would cause irritation with only minor residual injury”).

Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Ammonium Sulfate are listed below.

  • Ammonia + sulfuric acid plant tails gases (desulfurization),
  • Coal (low-temperature carbonisation),
  • Coal + sulfuric acid (high-temperature carbonisation),
  • Cyclohexanone + ammonia + fuming sulfuric acid (oleum) (Beckmann rearrangement),
  • Methacrylamide sulfate (hydrolysis)

The uses and applications of Ammonium Sulfate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Ammonium Sulfate are Food Chemical Codex grade (FCC, 99.9% minimum purity); technical/commercial/pure grade (99% minimum purity); and enzyme grade (no heavy metals).
