About Cyclohexanone. Cyclohexanone is an organic compound consisting of a six-carbon cyclic molecule with a ketone functional group attached to it. First prepared by the dry distillation of calcium pimelate, nowadays Cyclohexanone is produced on commercial scale mainly by catalytic hydrogenation of phenol or by the catalytic air-oxidation of cyclohexane. This cyclic ketone is an important chemical intermediate in the production of polyamides.

Cyclohexanone is a colorless, mobile liquid with an acetone-like odor. It is worth to note that the vast majority of Cyclohexanone commercially produced is captively consumed, either isolated or as a mixture of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone (referred to as KA oil), for onsite production of adipic acid and caprolactam. In smaller proportions, can also be used as a solvent.

Cyclohexanone Handling. Cyclohexanone is not corrosive, so it is usually shipped in 55 gal (208 L) iron or steel drums, in tank cars and tank trucks. Inert gas blanketing is not required in transportation or storage. Cyclohexanone is classified as a combustible liquid (flash point at 44°C), so it should be stored away from heat, sparks, flame, or other sources of ignition. For transportation, it must be labeled flammable and marked Hazard Level III.

Cyclohexanone Production. When it comes to commercial production, Cyclohexanone can be produced through different routes, starting from different raw materials. The catalytic hydrogenation of phenol and the catalytic air-oxidation of cyclohexane are among the main Cyclohexanone production routes. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Cyclohexanone are listed below.

  • Cyclohexanol (alcohol dehydrogenation),
  • Phenol (selective hydrogenation),
  • Cyclohexane (liquid phase oxidation),
  • Cyclohexene (hydration)

Cyclohexanone Uses. The uses and applications of Cyclohexanone may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Cyclohexanone are commercial grade (89% ketone content); and high purity grade (99.5% ketone content).
