About Triple Superphosphate. Triple Superphosphate (a.k.a. TSP, Monocalcium Phosphate) is an inorganic compound, in the Superphosphate Fertilizer class. It is commonly dry, granular solid, with gray or brown color, with over 90% of the total P being water-soluble, providing negatively charged phosphorous that are rapidly available for plant uptake. TSP is highly concentrated phosphorus fertilizer with contents of more than 35% diphosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) and it is suitable for feeding all the types of soils that have low pH. TSP accelerates the growth of the root system of the young plants.
Phosphate fertilizers do not present a specific health risk nor do they have undesirable chemical effects. Their transport is therefore not covered by dangerous good regulations. Many fertilizer products are transported in bulk. The physical stability of the contents of the ship hold in marine transport is a risk factor during loading and voyages in rough seas. TSP can be stored in bulk form in large unconfined heaps in buildings, in open-top enclosed bays (i.e. bunkers), in heaps in bays built into storage space, hoppers, bins or bags. The bags used for storage and transportation of TSP should be moisture proof and should be sealed or adequately closed. For bulk storage there may be a lower risk of the formation of molten material compared with bagged storage, because it is difficult for the fire and heat to penetrate the heap. Involvement of TSP in a fire (>982ºC) may lead to some decomposition. Inhalation of the decomposition gases, containing toxic fluorides and oxides of phosphorus, can cause irritation and corrosive effects on the respiratory system.
Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Triple Superphosphate are listed below.
- Phosphate rock + phosphoric acid (salt formation)
The uses and applications of Triple Superphosphate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Triple Superphosphate are contetnt of P2O5 between 42% and 50%.
