About Sodium Aluminum Hexafluoride. Sodium Aluminum Hexafluoride (a.k.a. Na3AlF6, Cryolite) is an inorganic sodium salt that appears as a white and odorless solid. Discovered in 1799, this salt is widely used in aluminum metal industrial production. Although it occurs naturally in the form of the mineral cryolite, all commercial product is synthetically made.

Sodium Hexafluoroaluminate should be stored in well-closed containers and must be kept away from food and feedstuffs. Also, it must be stored in an area without drain or sewer access. Aluminum alkyls are usually very reactive to moisture and compounds with active hydrogen. Therefore, it is recommended to store them in an inert atmosphere, such as under a blanket of inert gas.
