About Potassium Sulfate. Potassium Sulfate (a.k.a. K2SO4) is a salt that naturally occurs in salt deposits usually in the form of mineral double salts in combination with sulfates of calcium, magnesium and sodium. It is the second most important potassium fertilizer, representing almost 5% of the world demand for potash fertilizers.

Potassium Sulfate Handling. Potash fertilizers demand large storage capacities. The majority of potash fertilizer is transported in bulk in self-discharging wagons with a capacity up to 100 t, by rail, truck, or inland waterway. A small proportion of potash salts is supplied in sacks, usually containing 50 kg. Potassium sulfate does not cake, therefore it may be stored in the manufacturer’s packaging in covered warehouses. It can be transported by all modes of transport in accordance with the rules for the carriage of goods. Moreover, it is not regulated regarding the carriage of dangerous goods. This salt should be stored in dry, cool and well-ventilated area, in tightly closed container. It is usually saled in big bags. It should be stored between -5ºC and 30ºC.

Potassium Sulfate Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Potassium Sulfate are listed below.

  • Potassium chloride + sulfuric acid (Mannheim Process; coproduced hydrogen chloride),
  • Potassium chloride + sulfur dioxide (Hargreaves Process; coproduced hydrogen chloride),
  • Mixed minerals/brines (natural crystallization)

Potassium Sulfate Uses. The uses and applications of Potassium Sulfate may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Potassium Sulfate are granular (0.8-3.5 mm, min. 50% potash, min. 17.5% sulfur) and standard (0.2-0.8 mm, min. 50% potash, min. 17.5% sulfur).
