Resorcinol Price Outlook. The price of Resorcinol (United States) increased during December 2019 to 8,190 USD per metric ton, which represents a slight rise of 3% compared to the previous month’s value. On a year-over-year basis, the prices of Resorcinol (United States) increased significantly by 16%. Meanwhile, the average price of Resorcinol (China) amounted to 11,500 USD per metric ton, from 9,320 USD per metric ton one year earlier. On a month-over-month basis, the price of Resorcinol (China) is 7% higher than the price one month before.
The price of Resorcinol (Southeast Asia) rose considerably throughout December 2019, reaching 11,000 USD per metric ton. The price is 15% higher than the average price in the previous month and 2% lower than the average price one year before. In contrast, the prices of Resorcinol (Europe) increased significantly during December 2019, reaching 11,600 USD per metric ton, which means a rise of 7% from the previous month’s price and a rise of 24% from the previous year’s price.

About Resorcinol. Resorcinol (a.k.a. Benzene-1,3-diol) is an organic compound in the aromatic alcohol class structurally similar to phenol, but with another hydroxyl group attached to the carbon ring (specifically 2 atoms of carbon away from the other one). It is a white crystalline powder, with a sweet odor, insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents. Resorcinol is a synthetic alcohol and has been produced for more than 100 years. It has its main uses in the production of plastics/rubber and adhesives.
Resorcinol Handling. Resorcinol is classified as class 1 in flammability by the NFPA (flash point at 127°C), so it should be transported and stored away from heat sources. It is slightly more toxic than phenol and, in some places, like the EU, resorcinol must have a “harmful” label attached to its recipient.
Resorcinol Production. Raw materials and the respective production processes employed in the manufacturing of Resorcinol are listed below.
- Benzene + sulfur trioxide (sulfonation/alkali fusion),
- m-Diisopropylbenzene (liquid phase oxidation or hydroperoxidation, coproduced with acetone)
Resorcinol Uses. The uses and applications of Resorcinol may vary according to its specification. The main forms of Resorcinol are reagent grade (98% minimum purity); United States Pharmacopeia (USP)/technical grade (99% minimum purity); crude; and powder.
